It's been very mild and windy with significant fresh snow loss over the past week. Fortunately the Cairngorm's and Ben Nevis are high and arctic enough to have snow even in the spring and summer throughout most years. So despite the thaw we still have large areas of old snow in hidden coires and on easterly aspects for our winter courses.
The biggest problem now is accessing the snow as it requires effort - good hillwalking fitness and stamina.
We're running another Winter Mountaineering course from the 25th-29th February 2012 but with the emphasis on core hills and mountaineering skills rather than climbing complete winter routes.
We also plan to snow-hole on the plateau to make the best use of time and effort and have two places available at BOGOF prices - buy one get one fee!!!
