Tons of fresh snow meant the ski road was closed which meant a hike and wade up the hill for James and I to look at basic winter skills.
We looked at weather and avalanche assessment, clothing and nutrition before practising ice axe techniques such as the self belay and self arrest.
We then moved on to step cutting and use of crampons for our planned winter climb tomorrow. It turned out that James was a bit of a dab hand at sculpture and designed his own winter ice climbing wall to ascend the vertical icy cornice with ease!
